Looking for a dental office in the Gresham area that offers dental services for the whole family? You’ll find just what they’re looking for in Gresham Family Dentistry. We offer professional pediatric dentistry for children of all ages. The earlier you start your kid on the path to good dental health, the better.
When Should My Child Have Her First Dental Check-Up?
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends that a child go to the dentist by age 1 or within six months after the first tooth erupts. Primary teeth typically begin growing in around 6 months of age and most children should have all 20 of their baby teeth by age 3. Unfortunately, most children don’t see their family dentist until well after they have received all their baby teeth, which allows plenty of opportunity for cavities to form before the first visit.
According to the AAPD, it is very important to keep primary (or “baby”) teeth in place until they are lost naturally. The primary teeth are important for many reasons including:
- Helping children chew properly to maintain good nutrition
- Involvement in speech development
- Helping save space for permanent teeth
- Promoting a healthy smile that helps children feel good about the way they look
What Should I Expect on My Child’s First Dentist Visit?
On your child’s first visit, Gresham Family Dentistry will establish the state of your child’s dental hygiene. We want all our Gresham patients to have a healthy, happy smile. To help check on your child’s dental health and help them learn how to maintain good dental hygiene we will:
- Examine their teeth, gums, and bite
- Take X-rays to show any decay as well as look at the permanent teeth under the gums
- Give a fluoride treatment
- Evaluate any adverse habits such as thumb sucking or overuse of a pacifier
- Teach the child about dental hygiene and answer any questions you may have
Gresham Family Dentistry is happy to help all Gresham families with their dental health needs. We aim to offer a comfortable and friendly environment for our Gresham patients.
