Drinking Water Is Good For You – And Good For Your Teeth!

Everyone knows that drinking water is good for your health. Keeping your body hydrated is a major factor in maintaining your health in a broad sense. Did you know, however, that drinking water is also good for your teeth?

It’s true! Water can promote good dental health in a few different ways. For one, if you’re drinking tap water, you’re getting a healthy dose of fluoride, which strengthens your teeth. As of 2015, it was recommended by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that tap water has fluoride to help lower tooth decay. This decision was supported by the American Medical Association, the American Dental Association, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Additionally, a glass of water after a meal can wash away some of the stuff you don’t want clinging to your teeth. Leftover food, sugars, and acid, all get washed away, which means that the bad mouth bacteria has little to nothing to eat.

Finally, drinking water is a great way to avoid dry mouth. Dry mouth is a condition that, due to lack of saliva, makes it hard to chew and swallow. Water is a crucial component of your saliva. In fact, your saliva is 99% water. Not only is dry mouth unpleasant, but it also puts you at risk for tooth decay. Your saliva protects your mouth much like a glass of water does – it washes away bits of food and keeps your teeth strong with the help of fluoride, calcium, and phosphate.

It’s important to drink water every day! On top of that, remember to follow your daily brushing and flossing routine and you’ll be on your way to good oral health.
