How To Use Mouthwash

In addition to your regular brushing and flossing, using mouthwash can be an important part of your dental care routine at home. Not only does mouthwash help with bad breath, but it can help prevent tooth decay. Of course, it is important to remember that mouthwash can replace neither brushing your teeth nor flossing.

How Do I Use Mouthwash?

Be sure to brush your teeth first. Mouthwash can help wash away the loosened plaque after brushing and flossing. However, if you’ve used a fluoride toothpaste you may want to wait a little while before using mouthwash as it can wash away the concentrated fluoride.

To measure how much mouthwash to use, you can pour the mouthwash into the cup provided with the mouthwash itself or use a plastic measuring cup. The mouthwash should include instructions on how much to use, but it is typically between 3-5 teaspoons.

Rinse your mouth thoroughly! Swish the mouthwash all around, but do not swallow it. Gargle for about 30 seconds as well. Afterward, be sure to spit it all out!
