Nothing lasts forever, and toothbrushes are no exception. Continuing to brush your teeth with an overused toothbrush is just no good. Every now and then, you must replace your toothbrush for the sake of your oral health.

How often should you replace your toothbrush?

The general rule of thumb is to replace a toothbrush every 3 to 4 months. If you’ve recently been sick, you may want to try replacing it sooner still. Especially if your toothbrush is stored next to other toothbrushes, this can lead to the spread of germs. If you’re in doubt about the condition of your current toothbrush, check the bristles. Frayed ends don’t clean properly, so that’s a sure sign it’s time to move on.

Picking a new toothbrush.

When picking a new brush, you’ll have to decide which you prefer – electric or manual. Each has its benefits and drawbacks. Manual toothbrushes are portable, ready to use every time you need it, make no noise, and give you complete control over the pressure you put on your teeth and gums. Electric toothbrushes, on the other hand, require charging and are a little more cumbersome to travel with. The rotating motion of the bristles, though, can make it easier to clean between teeth and at the gum line. In the end, you want to choose a toothbrush that is comfortable to you.

How to maintain your toothbrush.

Keeping your toothbrush clean after you use it is important. According to the ADA, you should rinse your toothbrush under tap water after you brush to wash away any lingering toothpaste and saliva. Afterward, store the toothbrush in a vertical position, with the bristles positioned so they can air dry. Bacteria can build up on the toothbrush if it is stored in a container, so it’s best to let the bristles of the toothbrush fully dry between each usage.
