How To Clean Your Tongue
Cleaning your tongue should be a regular part of your oral health routine. Your tongue can harbor a lot of harmful bacteria that must be cleaned away. But how can you clean your tongue?
There are a number of acceptable ways to clean your tongue. The first and perhaps most obvious is to brush your tongue. Use toothpaste and brush as much as you can in gentle, circular motions. Some toothbrushes will even come with a tongue cleaner on the back of the toothbrush head, which can also be used to effectively clean the tongue.
Another option for cleaning your tongue is to use floss. Hold floss as you would to floss your teeth, then use the middle section to gently scrape your tongue. With both brushing your tongue and flossing your tongue, you must make sure to clean your tool of anything it picks up. Rinse your toothbrush or move on to a clean section of floss as needed.
Gresham patients may also opt to use a tongue scraper. Tongue scrapers are made from a soft and flexible type of plastic and can be used to gently peel away thin mucus-y layers of bacteria debris. Rinse the scraper as you go along.
Remember, if your tongue starts to feel sore or bleed while cleaning it, you’re being too rough. Go slow and be gentle. At minimum, you should clean your tongue twice a day after brushing your teeth.
