Gresham Family Dentistry Helps You Brush Your Teeth Right
At Gresham Family Dentistry, we offer the best in family dentistry services for the Gresham area. As part of our amazing family dentistry services, we make sure that our patients are using the right techniques for brushing their teeth. When it comes to brushing your teeth, there is a right and a wrong way. Learn 6 common mistakes people often make when they brush.
1. Picking the Wrong Toothbrush
You want to make sure you choose a toothbrush that can reach everywhere you need to clean in your mouth. Avoid toothbrushes with oversized heads, and always opt for soft bristles! Hard bristles can be harmful to your teeth. Soft bristles clean very effectively, and hard bristles can wear down the structure of your teeth.
2. Brushing Too Hard
When it comes to brushing, harder isn’t better. Plaque is soft and loose, so you don’t have to scrub. Instead of “scrubbing,” think of brushing your teeth as “massaging” them.
3. Rushing Through the Brushing
It’s tempting to try to rush through brushing if you’re running late in the morning or eager to get into bed. Don’t do it! Set a timer on your phone and make sure you’re going the full 2 minutes.
4. Delaying Getting a New Toothbrush
When you find a good toothbrush, it’s sometimes hard to give it up. However, when you see changes in the bristles — when they become discolored, bent, or dirty looking — it’s time to chuck the brush. It loses its powers when the bristles become frayed. So change it at least every 3 to 4 months.
5. Going Back and Forth While Brushing
Don’t brush along your teeth, left to right. Start from the gum, and go up and down in little circular, up-and-down motions. Brushing the wrong way won’t help you, and can even damage your teeth.
6. Forgetting the Gum Line
Bacteria often hangs out where your tooth meets your gums. Make sure to brush there! Brushing your teeth, it turns out, means brushing your whole tooth. Or at least everything you can get to with your brush, and that includes just under the gumline. How do you brush your gums? Angle the brush at a 45-degree angle against the gumline to get in where you need to clean. And don’t forget to brush the tongue-side of your teeth!
